Bhelpuri: Indian Street Food

Talking of Bhelpuri, it reminds us of Indian street food.

Indian street foods are very popular among men, women, children, old and young, and even among people who have come from different countries for work or have settled here.

Popular among street foods are some like Bhelpuri, Chaat (can find different kinds of chats), PaniPuri/Golgappas, Pav Bhaji and so many more to name them. The list will go on and on.

Thinking of street food like Bhelpuri, a smack of the lips is first what comes at the desire and thought of it. Making this at home is easy and you find it more flavoursome and tastier with all the hygiene and the cleanliness that is there.

Vegetable Utthappam/ Desi Pancake --- Tiffin Special

Tiffin and snacks are common in Indian homes. There are so many different types of tiffin, with every region, giving its different taste and flavour. Be it anywhere in India, Indians enjoy the tiffin.

Talking about pancakes, memory is still fresh in my mind, the different types of Bangali pancakes my mother used to make for us. Some were traditional and some her innovations. How simple it may be, the taste was always so good. Miss that Ma. The simple atta pancake, sweet pancakes, ahaaa!! We savoured those sweet ones, and asked for a second helping.

Let me take you through today’s vegetable utthappam. Simple, easy and tasty.

Medhu Vada

Today I made some Medhu Vadas for evening snacks.

Easy and simple to make and tasty to eat.

Home-made food is always in the comfort zone in the family. But people also enjoy food in restaurants or road-side food stalls. Eating home-made items gives a different pleasure and food from outside has its own pleasure to spread as they are savoured.

Anyway, after a long time today’s Medhu Vada finds a place in my blog.

I say ‘CHEERS” to me and tap my back for making a comeback after such a long span.

Instant Rava Dosa – Simple and Tasty Snack

Thinking about Dosa more fits with the thought of going to a restaurant, sitting in the far-side table with family or friends and ordering hot dosas served along with with some tangy sambar and tasty chutneys that go with it.

Bengalis mostly prefer to eat dosas outside, more so as they think making dosa at home is a long and burdensome process. These are some of the thoughts from my Bangali friends and relatives. If I am to say about this, I’m in two minds. If the batter is ready, then making some dosas at home is not a hurdle at all. But, food from outside does taste so different. So sitting and eating out on a holiday with a plate of crispy hot dosa from the hotplate of a good eating joint does taste heavenly.

Dimer Chop/Egg Chop/Anda Chop – When evening Snack-time comes calling…

At times I wonder, “how nice it would be to be served with a plate of some nice snack in the evening and eat away, enjoy and not a bead of sweat on the forehead for no labour has been put in by me”. Sometimes the thought of making some evening snack drives me crazy.

And it was so on this day. Sitting quietly, with legs put up on the stool and enjoying a TV programme, when, a glance at the clock made me get up. It was a sort of a hurried stand-up as time tried to say, “Get up lazy bug, enter the kitchen and make some tasty snack. I think your hungry stomach also want something to fill the gap in the stomach.”

I had to make headway…what to cook…a peek into the fridge…eggs beckoned me…and potatoes in the basket also wanted to come to my aid.

Fish Cutlet – Goody Goody Snack, Tasty Starter and…nothing fishy about it…

The aroma filled the room. When J, my friend visited that evening she couldn’t resist her temptation as the house was filled with the aroma that was cooking in the kitchen.

“What’s that happening in the kitchen? Ki sugondho, kisher go (what an aroma that has spread all around. What’s it from)”.

“Bosho, tomar share pabe (I’ll give you a share)”, I said giving her a sly wink.

Egg Roll with a Healthy Bite

It was the weekend evening and I knew there would be words about some tasty snack for gobbling up by everyone present. I had tucked my feet on the chair and in no mood to do anything other than watching the TV.

On the one hand it was Snacky Hunger Calling and at the same time dusk had fallen and it was quite dark outside. But I was enjoying the cool from the air conditioner with the idiot box doing all the noise in the room. The tray with the empty cups was on the center table waiting to be carried to the kitchen sink. We had just finished our cha and biscoot (tea and biscuit) but still then hunger tried to squeeze in into the stomach and there was want for food…at this time what more than a heavy snack…for dinner would be late all knew.
